America’s chief concern when having Donald Trump as 45th President of the United States is the fact that the tyrant may use the presidency to enrich himself or his family.
In fact, according to Think Progress, the Trump Organization pressured Kuwait into holding a major event at one of Trump’s hotels. The event was originally scheduled to be held at Four Seasons.
A source told ThinkProgress that:
“The Kuwaiti embassy, which has regularly held the event at the Four Seasons in Georgetown, abruptly canceled its reservation after members of the Trump Organization pressured the ambassador to hold the event at the hotel owned by the president-elect. The source, who has direct knowledge of the arrangements between the hotels and the embassy, spoke to ThinkProgress on the condition of anonymity because the individual was not authorized to speak publicly. ThinkProgress was also able to review documentary evidence confirming the source’s account.’
Earlier this week, Al-Sabah confirmed that he had signed a contract with the Trump Organization to hold the event at Trump International Hotel.
Moreover, he did admit that it’s possible he may have spoken with a member of the Trump Organization prior to changing the venue but says the decision was not political.
On the other hand, Think Progress’ source claims that the move was politically motivated. If so, that could mean that Trump is using his presidency to help himself which is a serious conflict of interest. It is also an action that some legal scholars argue would be a violation of the Constitution’s emoluments clause.
Furthermore, one unnamed diplomat even said that they believe that the Trump International Hotel will become very popular with diplomats and other foreign dignitaries. The unnamed source allegedly said, “believe me, all the delegations will go there.”
Nonetheless, even before Trump became President, there were concerns that he was using the office of the presidency to enrich his business.
Is this a conflict of interest or what?
