Two Indian immigrants were enjoying drinks at a bar in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe in Kansas when a gunman named Adam Purinton allegedly opened fire at them.
Indian-born engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla perished from the gunshot wounds while his friends and fellow engineer Alok Madasani was gravely injured and is hospitalized. A third man, Ian Grillot, suffered injuries when he jumped in front of Purinton to stop him from shooting any more people. For days, the White House was completely silent about this obvious hate crime. The Kansas City Star‘s editorial board decided they’d had enough, and slammed Trump for it.
Wrote the editors in a column titled “Editorial: Trump’s silence on deadly Olathe shooting is disquieting”, “At some point, embarrassingly late begins to verge on something more disquieting. President Donald Trump has silently planted himself in that space. Nearly a week has passed since two India-born engineers were singled out and shot at an Olathe bar, presumably because they were immigrants, darker in skin tone and possibly viewed by the shooter as unwanted foreigners. People around the world were immediately and rightfully horrified. But our president? Mum. Not a word has been spoken, tweeted or prepped for Trump’s teleprompter.”
They continued, “On Monday, Hillary Clinton tweeted a Kansas City Star story recounting the plea from Kuchibhotla’s widow for a U.S. response to hate crimes. Clinton goaded Trump, writing: ‘With threats & hate crimes on rise, we shouldn’t have to [email protected] do his part. He must step up & speak out.’ White House press secretary Sean Spicer has faced questions about the president’s response to the Olathe shootings. Spicer termed the murder ‘tragic.’ But when Spicer was asked about any correlation between the shootings and Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric, the White House press secretary proclaimed the assertion ‘absurd,’ shutting down further discussion.” Do you support the Kansas City Star for calling Trump out like this?
