The most horrifying immediate consequence of Donald Trump’s shock election victory over Hillary Clinton is the spike in hate crimes against Muslims, blacks, women and other disenfranchised groups.
Trump supporters, emboldened by Trump’s win and his affiliation with hate groups, seem determined to assert themselves in the most violent and sickening ways possible.
According to the Columbus Dispatch in Ohio, a Capital University student named Brittany Daughenbaugh was harassed and assaulted by two men wile she was talking outside to play Pokemon Go. Wrote Brittany on her Facebook, “While these men were making the decision to violate my being, they were laughing and shouting.”
One attacker reportedly said to Brittany, “Don’t you worry, honey. President Trump says this is OK.” They then punched Brittany in the face, making her black out when her head hit the pavement. According to Brittany, one man was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, and another was wearing a Trump-Pence sweatshirt. Police are actively investigating the case. Said Brittany to the Dispatch, “I don’t know what is better, that this is something they would have done anyway, or they were empowered to do it by his election.” How terrifying is this?
