One funny yet sad story from the beginning of the Trump era is how some owners of large scale owners of farming operations supported Trump because he didn’t think he’d actually make good on his promise to block and deport migrant laborers.
These owners, who rely on cheap, undocumented labor to harvest their crops, suddenly have found themselves in a huge bind of their own making. One such owner is none other than Eric Trump himself, who is proving to be a hypocrite for the ages.
While his father was enacting travel bans and escalating deportation efforts, Eric Trump on February 9th submitted a petition with the U.S. Department of Labor to bring on foreign workers to, as his father put it, “take Americans’ jobs” at the Trump Winery in Virginia. He made a similar request in December for six workers. Explained Buzzfeed, “The Trump Winery, also known as Trump Vineyard Estates, LLC, is asking to bring in 23 workers this spring to plant and harvest grapes. The workers are being sought under the federal H-2 visa program, which permits American employers to hire foreign laborers under temporary work visas as long as no qualified U.S. workers want the jobs. The job on the 1,300-acre estate could run through late October.”
You’ll be pleased to hear that consumers have been fighting back against Eric Trump and his plainly hypocritical business operation. Trump wines have become a target of the #GrabYourWallet campaign, which is attempting to get Trump wins off grocery store shelves. There is currently a boycott against high end grocery chain Wegmans, which carries the wines. Stated one shopper in a review on Wegmans Facebook page, “I grew up with Wegmans as a Rochester local and have shopped there my whole life. Please drop the Trump products in your Virginia stores so I can continue to be a Wegmans fangirl and update my review!” Do you support the boycott against Eric Trump’s winery?
